Caring for and Cleaning antique guns? - cleaning a flintlock

Hello guys! I have a question for you lovers of firearms and amateur Civil War. Here's the deal, my birthday, I took my parents to an antique store of weapons in New York. I'm considering the purchase of an antique (ignition is more likely) weapon. But I know nothing about caring for one or own. The weapon was only an air rifle. I certainly am willing to take care of him, do not shoot too. How can I clean? When it's over? Is this a bad idea? Thank you!
